Dryer lint can pose a health and safety hazard

Cleaning out dryer lint isn't just an occasional chore that needs to be done to keep your dryer operating efficiently. It's also a job that should be done periodically to keep your house from burning down. Since dryer lint is extremely combustible and most dryers are run at high heat, excess dryer lint can pose a real threat to your family's health and safety. It's important that you remove lint in both traps and vents at least once a year, and more often if you use your dryer frequently. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lint trap from the dryer. You can generally get rid of excess lint with your fingers. A vacuum can also be used to remove tiny pieces of lint caught in the trap, as well as larger pieces that can fall into the tray. Use the lint as compost, leave it outside for birds to use in nesting, or put it in the fireplace to start planned fires.

    • 2

Remove the duct from the rear of the drier. Make sure lint isn't clogged at the dryer or duct end. Unplug the drier before sticking any tools into it to remove clogged lint. Be careful not to puncture the duct that leads to the outdoor vent. Replace the duct, making sure it's tightly connected to the drier.

Check the outside vent, which is usually connected to the dryer by a long duct. Most vents will have covers that can be removed. Be careful not to tear the interior duct or let it fall into the interior of the house. Use a shop vacuum to remove extra lint from the duct. Replace the cover. Make sure it's attached tightly to the exterior of the house.
