Making International Calls From the USA
Calling abroad from the United States requires more than just the standard seven-digit phone number plus area code. To initiate an international call, you'll need to use the IDD (international Direct Dialing) number. You'll then need a country code for the place you wish to call. This procedure is the same whether you're calling from a cell phone or a land line.

1
Ensure your phone has international dialing enabled. Some companies automatically restrict this feature until you ask them to do otherwise. Use the toll-free customer service number to speak to a representative (look on a recent invoice if you don't know the number.) You may also wish to ask about the charges associated with calling outside the country--these are rarely included in cell phone or home phone plans.

2
Go to the Country Calling Codes website to look up the country code for the country you are calling (see Resources). You can also look up a city or area code from this page if you do not have this information.

3
Dial "011," which is the IDD for the U.S., plus the country code, area or city code, and phone number.

Tips & Warnings
A few countries (like Canada) support direct dialing. This means you can dial "1" plus the area code and phone number, just like you would for a call within the United States. For a complete list of direct dialing codes, go to AT&T's Direct Dial Countries website (see Resources).
