How to Make a Clasp for a Small Change Purse

How to Make a Clasp for a Small Change Purse thumbnail
A purse clasp can easily be made using elastic and a button.

A small change purse is perfect for toting coins, subway tokens, medication, makeup or other loose items. It's important to keep your change purse closed securely so its contents don't fall out. Clasps are used to close bags and pouches and can be made from a number of materials including metals, magnets and fabric. You can make your own clasp using a few simple items.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the center of your change purse by measuring along the edge of the purse opening. Mark the center on both sides of the purse.

    • 2

Create a loop out of the fabric ribbon and hold both ends in your hand. The loop should be even on both sides and the ends should be lined up.

    • 3

Pin the ends of the loop onto the backside of your change purse at the center marking.

    • 4

Stitch the ends of the loop in place using a straight stitch on your sewing machine or sew by hand.

    • 5

Bring the loop over the top of the purse to the center of the front side. It should line up with your center marking from Step 1.

    • 6

Place the button on the center mark. Hold the button in place with one hand and grasp your needle in the other hand.

    • 7

Sew the button in place and secure by tying a knot in the underside of the fabric.

    • 8

Close your purse by stretching the elastic ribbon over the button and open it by releasing the ribbon.
