How to Make Word & Alphabet Cards

How to Make Word & Alphabet Cards thumbnail
Children will learn to read more readily with flashcards.

When you are teaching young children to read, you must start by helping the children identify the uppercase letters of the alphabet and some of the most common simple words used when reading. One way to accomplish this is to create word and alphabet cards that can be shown to a child daily to reinforce memorization. You can make alphabet and word cards from craft materials that can be purchased at an art store.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out 40 pieces of card stock measuring 4 inches high and 6 inches long.

    • 2

Separate the cards into two stacks: one with 26 cards, and the other with 14 cards.

    • 3

Place the stack of 26 cards in front of you, and write an uppercase letter of the alphabet onto each card with a pencil. Draw the letters as large as you can to fill the space, putting a different letter on each card until you have used all 26 uppercase letters.

    • 4

Place the stack of 14 cards in front of you, and write some of the most common short words onto the cards using a pencil, one word per card. Use words that are seen frequently in easy readers, such as "the," "see," "run," "sat," "rug" and "ball." Write each word large enough to fill the space.

    • 5

Color over the pencil with colorful paint pens. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the word and alphabet flashcards with your child.
