Transmission fluid breaks down over time.

Automatic transmission fluid is an essential oil used to lubricate and cool a vehicle's manual transmission. Its main function is to minimize the extreme friction that's created when the engine is running. Car manufacturers recommend changing the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles because over time it becomes diluted, losing its viscosity. Fortunately, changing the transmission fluid in your Honda CR-V is a simple and straightforward maintenance task that will save you money at the auto repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Warm the engine to normal operating temperature then turn it off. Raise the CR-V at the front end with an automobile jack. Place jack stands under the jacking points behind the front wheels. Chock the rear wheels.

    • 2

Place an oil drain container under the transmission fluid pan. Remove the drain plug with a socket wrench. Allow the fluid to drain completely.

    • 3

Clean the drain plug with a shop rag and replace the plug with the socket wrench. Remove the jack stands and lower the CR-V to the ground.

    • 4

Raise the hood and remove the transmission fluid dipstick from the transmission filler tube located behind the battery. Twist the yellow cap and pull the dipstick out.

    • 5

Place a funnel into the filler tube and pour 4 quarts of transmission fluid into the transmission. Replace the dipstick into the filler tube.

    • 6

Start the engine. With the brakes applied, move the car through each gear to circulate the new fluid.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the old fluid to an auto parts store, your local AAA or neighborhood recycling center for disposal.
