Casement windows use a crank operator to swing the window open and shut. Most vinyl units ride along a track that the operator arm controls. Others pivot on either brackets or hinges. When you paint, you usually need to remove the sash and operator. The procedure is similar between brands.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Vise grips
- Flathead screwdriver
- Flat pry bar
- Nut driver
Open the window fully. If your crank handle only spins, remove the set screw that secures the handle to the handle shaft. Pull the handle off and turn the handle crank shaft stem with vise grips to open the window.
Hold the outer edge of the sash frame with one hand and disconnect the crank arm from the window track with your free hand. Pull the sash toward you as necessary to line up the end of the crank arm with the notch in the track to remove it from the sash.
Lift the sash slightly and disengage it from the lower track if it rides on tracks. Pull the lower end of the sash toward you and remove it completely from the frame.
Remove the screws securing the sash hinge to the window frame if your sash mounts with hinges. Lift up on the bottom of the sash if it uses pins to connect to pivots. Pull the bottom of the sash from the lower pivot and pull it away from the window frame.
Remove Crank Operator
Remove the upper trim that covers the top of the crank operator arm on the lower window sill. Remove the screws securing the trim if you have vinyl windows. Wooden windows require careful prying to remove the trim.
Insert a flat pry bar between the seam of the trim and window sill if you have wooden frames. Tap the pry bar with a hammer and carefully pry the trim away from the sill.
Remove the screws securing the crank operator body to the window sill with a screwdriver or nut driver, depending upon the screw head. Lift the crank operator away from the sill.
