How to Install a Vinyl Window in a Basement
Replacing your basement windows is a good way to improve both the look and the efficiency of your home. Basement windows are easier to replace than most other windows in the home because they're smaller than other windows. They're sold in pre-hung, self-contained units, so even those that open and close don't require you to install your own hardware. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure window opening, horizontally and vertically, with the old window still in place. Measure from inside the opening at the widest points of each side. Subtract ½ inch from the measurement in both directions. Order the replacement window according to those adjusted measurements. Leave the old window in place until you have the new one in hand.

2
Remove the thin border of trim from the inside of the opening with a hammer and prybar. Don't break it as you take it out. Run the jigsaw around the edges of the window casing along the frame, cutting through the screws holding it in place. Pull the window out.

Set the replacement window in the opening. Put a carpenter's level along the bottom span of the window casing. Place shims under the casing until it's level.
-
4
Drive screws into the screw holes into the sides of the casing and into the surrounding frame.
-
5
Stuff batt insulation into the spaces around the casing between the window and the surrounding wall.
-
6
Reinstall the narrow trim around the window. Caulk around the perimeter of the window, inside and out.
