How to Test DSL Broadband Speed

Many are upgrading to DSL/broadband Internet every day to take advantage of the lightning-fast upload and download speeds that come with the service. If you already have DSL/broadband, you want to make sure you are getting what you're paying for. One way to check is to run a speed test, which can be performed on the Internet for free.

Instructions

    • 1

Log on to the Internet and browse to the DSL Reports website. (See Resources)

    • 2

Click the blue "Tools" button at the top of the page.

    • 3

Click the gray "Speed Tests" button, which is located under the blue button bar.

    • 4

Choose the type of test you'd like to run. The first test (Flash version) should be fine for just about everyone.

    • 5

Download and install the plug-in, if necessary. The website provides a link to do so.

    • 6

Click on any of the cities that has open test slots available.

    • 7

Watch as the application automatically tests your DSL/broadband speed. When it is done, it will display results for download speed, upload speed and latency.
