How to Repair a Scratch in Coated Stainless Steel

Remove a scratch from stainless steel with baking soda.

Coated stainless steel can come in varying degrees of density, with less denting in thicker varieties, and less flexibility in thinner ones. Unfortunately, as strong as coated steel is, it will scratch if cleaned with harsh tools or abrasives. Remove minor scratches by polishing to restore the appearance of coated stainless steel and help prevent further damage to the material.

Things You'll Need

• Rags
• Cloths
• Baking soda

Instructions

1. Mix 2 tbsp. of baking soda with four to five drops of water, or enough to form a thick paste.

2. Apply the baking soda paste to the scratch. With your finger wrapped in a damp cloth, rub the baking soda into the scratch. Scrub back and forth using moderate pressure, rubbing with the grain of the stainless steel.

3. Examine the scratch after rubbing four to five times with the baking soda. Continue rubbing and inspecting the blemish until completely removed.

4. Wipe the stainless steel with a damp rag. Dry the steel surface using a clean cloth.

Tips & Warnings

• Polishing will only alleviate minor scratches. Deeper scratches may be irreparable.
