When installing a new circuit or adding to an existing one, it is critical that you use the proper sized wire required for the amount of current you are planning on running. Using wire that is of a smaller gauge than what is required can cause repetitive breaker trips, increases the risk of fire and may also cause damage to the appliances connected to the circuit.
Determine the amount of current that will be going through the circuit. Generally, household circuits carry either 15 or 20 amps, depending on the number of outlets on the circuit and the estimated load of the appliances.
Chose the wire that has the gauge rating appropriate to the current your circuit will carry. Use a wire size calculator to determine the proper wire gauge. For a 15-amp circuit, you should use be a minimum of 14-gauge wire.
Double check that the wire you purchased is accurately labeled before you pull the wire for your amplifier. If you have purchased nonmetallic cable, ensure that the cable contains the appropriate number of wires for your circuit.
