How to Remove Brake Dust off of Chrome Rims
Chrome rims are an attractive addition to any vehicle. Unfortunately, they can become stained and dingy from brake dust accumulating on them. There are some simple and quick steps to follow to clean the brake dust from the chrome rims on your vehicle, restore the shine and help protect them from further buildup. Best of all, this can be done with inexpensive products that you already have in your home.
Things You'll Need
- Bucket
- 5 cups of all-purpose automobile cleaner
- 4 cups of warm water
- Sponge
- Soft toothbrush
- 2 lint-free cleaning cloths
- Chrome polishing compound (any brand)
- Automotive spray wax (any brand)

Mix five cups of any universal automobile cleaner and four cups of warm water in a bucket. Saturate a clean sponge in the mixture.

Scrub the entire rim with the sponge and solution that was prepared in the previous step. Remove any loose dirt or debris, using the wet sponge.

Scrub the rim, using the soft-bristled toothbrush. Scrub using small, circular motions. Pay extra attention to any areas that have excessive brake dust buildup.

Rinse the wheel completely with clean water. Rinse right after washing, to prevent soap spots.

Dry the wheel, using a lint-free cleaning cloth. Dry immediately after the area has been rinsed to prevent water spots.

Polish the wheel after drying it thoroughly by applying a dab of any brand of chrome polishing compound onto a clean lint-free cloth. Polish using large, smooth, circular motions. Add more compound until you achieve the shine you desire.

Tips & Warnings
Wear rubber gloves during the process to prevent the strong cleaning solution from drying out your skin.
