How to Add a VMware Accelerated Adapter

VMware is a virtual machine software program that runs operating systems inside other operating systems. The virtualized guest operating systems run inside a window on the computer as if they were running on a normal computer, since VMware provides virtual hardware devices. One of these virtual hardware devices is the VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter, which provides increased network speeds and greater network performance. In some cases, upgrading a virtual machine's hardware version can change the network device's driver to an unaccelerated one or the virtual machine may not have any virtual network hardware configured.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the guest operating system if it's running. For example, click "Start" and "Shut Down" in a Windows 7 guest operating system.

    • 2

Right-click the guest operating system's name in the VMware window and click "Virtual Machine Settings."

    • 3

Click "Network Adapter" in the list of hardware and verify the "Connect at Startup" check box is checked. If "Network Adapter" isn't present, click "Add," click "Network Adapter," click "Next" and click "Finish."

    • 4

      Click "OK."

    • 5

Start the guest operating system by double-clicking it.

    • 6

Install VMware Tools on the guest operating system if it isn't already installed by clicking the "Virtual Machine" menu at the top of the guest operating system's window once the system powers on, clicking "Install VMware Tools" and following the instructions on the screen.

    • 7

Click "Start" and "Computer" inside the guest operating system.

    • 8

      Navigate to the "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers" folder.

    • 9

Right-click the "vmware-nic.inf" file and click "Install." If you don't see it, double-click the "vmxnet" folder, right-click the "vmware-nic.inf" file inside it and click "Install."
