How to Use the Nike SportBand

Trying to track distance, time and calories can detract from the enjoyment of a run.

One of the biggest challenges for runners is keeping track of mileage, calories and time. A watch can keep track of time, a portable GPS unit can track mileage, and a heart rate monitor can be used to calculate calories burned, but there are very few all-in-one tools capable of measuring all three important variables for runners. One of the world's largest athletic equipment suppliers, Nike attempts to fill that gap with its SportBand device.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the SportBand software from the Nike website and install it on your computer. Unplug the SportBand module from the wristband by pulling on it gently. Plug the module into your computer's USB port. The computer will act as a charger for the module. Keep the module in the computer at least two hours. Use the software to enter your height, weight, age and other information.

Plug your module back into the SportBand when you're ready to run. Place the small sensor in your shoe. If it's a pair of Nikes, you should find a small sensor compartment under the padding, near the heel. Start walking and hold the "Record" button on the SportBand for three seconds. When the shoe icon blinks and the numbers begin blinking, begin running.

Press the "Record" button when you start running. Use the toggle switch at the bottom of the SportBand to switch between time, distance, pace and calories. When you're through running, press and hold the "Record" button for three seconds. Remove the module and plug it into your computer to upload your run information.
