If you have ever had a dry cough, you know how aggravating it can be. You can cough repeatedly and unproductively, only making your throat sore and your voice hoarse. It is annoying to you (and everyone around you), especially at night when people are trying to sleep. A few simple solutions can help you get rid of dry cough quickly and effectively.

Hydrate your whole body quickly. Usually, a dry cough signifies that the mucous in your lungs and throat is dry. Drink a hot cup of tea every hour. To be daring, add a little sweetener and a few drops of Tabasco hot sauce. It will help increase your circulation. Keep the sugar to a minimum.

Take a vitamin C tablet every four hours and a cod liver oil capsule every eight hours to help your body fight the virus or bacteria that may be causing your cough. Help your immune system by eating bright, colorful fruits and vegetables, such as lemons or carrots, at every meal. If your throat is too sore, try vegetable soup.

Stop talking and rest your voice as much as possible. You want to keep your throat from getting any more sore by keeping the cough calm. Sleep will do wonders for helping you recover faster.

Cough into a pillow to give your stomach muscles a little resistance when you cough. This should help coughs to be a little more productive, as well as keep you from spreading germs everywhere.

Take a long, steamy shower. This is especially effective for children who may not understand what is happening to them. The water is soothing and the steam will help hydrate the lungs, making the mucous easier to cough up. A warm bath will also work well.

Tip

  • Try taking extra zinc to boost your immune system.
