Earn some extra cash by recycling your empty toner cartridges.

Every year, millions of toner cartridges end up in landfills. Once there, they may take decades or even hundreds of years to decompose. An alternative to tossing used toner cartridges in the trash is to recycle them with one of the many toner and ink cartridge recyclers. Some of these recyclers will even pay you cash for your empty cartridges. As long as the cartridges are not damaged, recyclers will often refill and resell them to other customers.

Instructions

    • 1

Package your toner cartridge for transport by placing it in the box it came in or the box its replacement came in. If you don't have the box, use bubble wrap or newspaper to wrap the cartridge and place it in another box. Take care that you do not damage the cartridge.

Locate a toner cartridge recycler. Check your local business listings or contact your garbage disposal company for information on recyclers in your area. You can also contact the company that you purchase your cartridges from and ask if they have a collection program. If you can't find a local recycling company, you can mail your used cartridges to one of several online recyclers. See the Resources section below for details.

Mail or drop off your empty toner cartridges with the collection center of your choice. If your cartridge supplier has a recycling program, arrange to have the cartridges picked up on the next delivery. Fill out any claim forms required and provide your personal information for payment. Receive your payment in person or by mail, depending on which collection center you are working with.
