How to Get Students to Exceed on the CRCT
The Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) is a series of standardized tests first implemented by Georgia state law in 2000. The test works to assess individual student achievement in accordance with the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS), as well as to gauge the quality of education provided throughout the state. Subjects of emphasis include reading comprehension, English and the language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. As is true for most standardized tests, you can employ effective methods of preparation for the CRCT to ensure success.

1
Print out copies of the CRCT student guide and distribute them. These guides help students to anticipate the kind of information they will be tested on, and thus allow for more organized study sessions.
-
2
Assign the students to take several teacher-created practice tests using Georgia's Online Assessment System (OAS). The OAS allows students to take online tests which are tailored to model the actual CRCT. Once finished, the system provides immediate feedback regarding a student's performance. Follow the second link in the "Resources" section below to learn more about and access the OAS.

3
Acquire practice test booklets from the Georgia Department of Education or your local school district office. While online tests and study guides are beneficial in their own rights, passing out booklets and practicing actual test procedure will allow students to acclimate to the process. This helps make students more comfortable and less nervous in the actual testing environment.

4
Stress the importance of ample rest and good nutrition during the days before the test. A solid eight hours of sleep and a wholesome breakfast (bran cereal and fruit, for example) or lunch will ensure that the student has the fuel to perform well on the CRCT.

Tips & Warnings
Begin preparing for the CRCT early--a few practice tests within a several-month period act as a reliable primer. Also encourage students to take tests provided by the OAS in their spare time.
Although the results of CRCT are important, both for students and for Georgia's schools, refrain from inducing stress on the young test-takers. Keep the test-taking environment relaxed and free of worry.
