Ground a CB Antenna

A CB antenna can receive a wireless signal through the airwaves. It's also susceptible to being struck by lightning. Ground the CB antenna to remove the danger of a lightning strike that could cause serious damage to the equipment hooked up to the CB antenna. The grounding components are supplied with CB antenna kits and are also available as a separate purchase. The procedure is straightforward and is primarily the same for any CB antenna, with minor differences due to its construction having to be taken into consideration.

Things You'll Need

  • 16-gauge, solid-core copper wire, 26 inches
  • Pliers
  • Plastic ties
  • 1-inch diameter copper ground rod, six-feet long
  • Sledge hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap one end of the copper wire around the top of the CB antenna. Squeeze the pliers' jaws around the wire wrapped around the rod. Continue squeezing until the rod deforms. This will help keep the wire attached to the top of the antenna.

    • 2

Run the copper wire down the length of the CB antenna, wrapping a plastic tie around the wire and antenna every three feet until the wire reaches the bottom of the antenna.

    • 3

Drive the ground rod two-thirds of the way into the ground as close as possible to the antenna without touching it --- use the sledge hammer to pound the rod into the ground.

    • 4

Wind the free end of the copper wire around the grounding rod, a few inches above where it goes into the ground.

    • 5

Squeeze the pliers' jaws around the copper wire wrapped around the rod. Continue squeezing until the rod deforms.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is wise to ground all of the equipment to which the CB antenna is connected.
