Choose between available pre-made columns in a height just slightly shorter than the height of your room so it will slide in easily without ruining your ceilings. Generally, columns come in three styles. The first, Doric columns, are very thick and heavy. The second, Ionic columns, have decorative bases that are thicker than the columns themselves; and the third, Corinthian columns, are the most slender and are topped with a decorative entablature.

Narrow your search by selecting among wooden, precast stone or fiberglass columns. The latter is often the preferred choice of builders, because they are cheaper, are insect-proof and require almost no maintenance.

    • 3

Have the columns delivered by the manufacturer or vendor. When the columns are delivered, ask that they be set down where you'd like them to go. To divide a room, this should be at opposing walls where you want the room divided, or where you would otherwise envision a wall going. The columns should be near each wall, but not touching, so that when you step back and look at them, they form a wide entryway from one area to another.

Paint your columns in a color matching your walls or in the color of your window and door trims to make it feel like part of the architecture.

Place tall, decorative plants or another stand-alone decorative piece in the space between each column and the nearest wall to create further division between the two spaces.
