How to Make Letters for Poster Boards
Being able to create clear, easy-to-read lettering is critical when designing a poster with words. Posters that are easy to read make the message clearer. There are many ways to create lettering by hand, including writing the letters freehand and using stencils. Using a computer, however, will allow you to create crisp, clean letters of any size.
Instructions

1
Measure your poster board. Determine the size you want the letters to be.
-
2
Open Microsoft Word.
-
-
3
Turn on the rulers in Microsoft Word by clicking the "view ruler" button at the top of the vertical scroll bar. If that does not turn on the ruler, click on the "Microsoft Office" button, followed by the "Word Options" tab and then the "Advanced" tab. Check the "Show vertical ruler in Print Layout view" box in the Display tab.
-
4
Type the letters.
-
5
Highlight the words; select the font you want to use.
-
6
Select the point size for your letters. Fonts are measured in points and represent the height of the character. One point is equal to about 1/72 inch. Use this conversion to determine what point size to use. For example, if you want letters that are 1 inch high, set the type to 72 points. Or use the ruler in Microsoft Office to guide you. Don't worry about line breaks and how many letters you can fit on a page. Just type the letters on the page; arrange them later. For example, if you need letters that are 5 inches high, you can fit only a couple of letters on a standard letter-size sheet of paper.
-
7
Print the letters.
-
8
Cut out each letter using the scissors or a ruler and craft knife.
-
9
Arrange the letters on the poster board. Glue each letter.
