A labor and industries attorney will help you settle employment related legal issues.

Legal issues in the workplace can be difficult and uncomfortable situations to handle by yourself. If you have been injured at work and are having difficulty receiving workers' compensation or if you have been harassed or discriminated against at the workplace and you wish to file a lawsuit, then you must hire a labor and industries, or employment lawyer. Many different types of attorneys in the U.S. help clients with a variety of legal problems. Therefore, you must be sure to find an employment attorney who handles your types of employment cases.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask family members, friends and co-workers for a reference. If you know anyone who has ever had an employment-related problem and who hired an attorney, ask him whether he was pleased with the attorney's representation and, if so, for his contact information. Further, if you currently have an attorney who handles your other affairs, such as your estate or a prior personal-injury case, ask her if she knows competent lawyers who practice labor and industries law.

Search an attorney database on the Internet. There are multiple attorney-locating resources that are available on the Internet for free. Services such as Martindale-Hubbell, LegalMatch and Findlaw allow you to search for an attorney by legal practice area and by jurisdiction. Search for in-state employment lawyers who are located near you.

    • 3

Obtain labor and industry attorney contact information from your local bar association. State and local county bar associations operate lawyer referral services that provide information to the public about attorneys who can help with specific legal problems. Call the bar association's lawyer referral service and ask for an attorney who can help you with your specific employment-related problem. In most cases, the attorney will discuss your case with you for a discounted rate, or for free, when contacted through the referral service.

Obtain contact information from the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA). NELA is an association of attorneys who only practice employment law and provide services to employees in the United States. Navigate to its website and use its "Find an Attorney" searching utility to obtain the information for one if its members.
