The artistry of the casting director has been defined by the CSA.

The Casting Society of America has been working steadily to improve and promote professional casting director standards since February 1982. Due to the work of the CSA, the casting director field is now recognized by the Emmy Awards in several categories. Membership for seasoned United States and international casting directors provides advanced career development opportunities through networking, committee activity and status. Direct invitation or a sponsored application is required for all director level applications.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a qualifying resume. A CSA casting director nominee must present television, film or theater billing credits as a casting director for a period of no less than two years prior to application. Casting credits may not include the word 'assistant' or 'associate' to qualify as credentials for CSA casting director membership.

    • 2

Secure two letters of recommendation. CSA casting director nominees must be sponsored by two active members who can validate work quality and credits. Network and studio executives who have been invited to receive casting director membership by the CSA Board of Directors do not need letters of recommendation.

    • 3

Complete and submit the appropriate application. The CSA is governed by an East Coast board of directors in New York and a West Coast board of directors in Los Angeles. You should apply for membership from the board that is most relevant to your body of work.

    • 4

Wait for notification of acceptance. Processing of your application and the board of directors vote can take 30 to 60 days. The CSA will notify you when your membership has been approved.
