How to Prevent the Absenteeism of Student Nurses

Nursing is a popular field for students in colleges across the United States and the world. However, as with all majors and professions, it is important to prevent absenteeism in classes, training and laboratory sessions as much as possible. There are a number of steps that can be taken to keep student nurses dedicated to their positions and to be absent only when it's truly required.

1. Establish a feeling of positive community in the classroom and training sessions. A good environment where people are friendly and polite--and where personal differences can be handled professionally--leads to a sense of belonging and community. 2. Layout the absentee policy so that it's understood by all students from the very first day. All schools should have an absenteeism policy, including how many days can be taken, notification procedures and what incidents qualify as absence-worthy.

3. Handle problems efficiently and professionally. For instance, if a group can't meet for a project due to a scheduling problem, it should be resolved as quickly as possible with the solution that suits everyone. The same goes for personal emergencies, differences among students and even differences between students and professors. It's important that you keep communication open and attempt to solve any problems that could cause absenteeism.
