Type www.americanexpress.com/activate into your web browser.

Enter the account number and 4-digit identification number found on your card and press 'Continue'. Both numbers can be found on the front of your card.

Enter the personal information requested and customize your account setting options. This helps American Express identify you as the rightful owner of the card and lets you choose from alerts you can receive via email or mobile phone.

Read through the terms and conditions set forth by American Express and mark the checkbox that shows you will agree to them. Hitting the 'Continue' button will allow you to access your account.

Call American Express Customer Service at 1-800-528-4800.

Enter or say your card account number.

Enter or say your personal identification key, such as your mother's birthday or pet's name. If you haven't yet established a key, or can't remember it, hit the "#" button and the voice prompt will ask a different identifying question.

Listen to your account summary and follow the command prompts that follow for whatever additional information you want.
