How to: Square Foot to Acreage

An acre is an internationally recognized unit of measurement that can be easily converted into standard and metric forms. Acreage refers to an area's size measured in acres. Acreage as a measurement tool is reserved for larger areas and is the preferred unit of measurement in surveying large tracts of land. Being able to convert from square feet to acres can help you better visualize the true size of acreage.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain the area's width and length. If the length and width are in yards, multiply each measurement by 3 to convert the measurement to feet. 1 yard = 3 feet.

    • 2

Multiply the area's width by its length to obtain its area in square feet. For example, if an area's width, W = 5,000 feet and its length, L = 9,000 feet, then the area can be found by using the formula area A = W x L. In this case, the area A = 5,000 x 9, 000 = 45, 000 square feet.

    • 3

Divide the amount of square footage by 43,560, which is the conversion constant between square footage and acreage. For the example, 45,000/43,560 equals 1.033 acres.
