How to Remove Sarees

How to Remove Sarees thumbnail
An Indian saree gives a woman the feeling of luxury and comfort.

India's love affair with cotton dates back many centuries, when as early as 600 B.C. the Vedas first mention Indian women wearing sarees made of cotton. The saree is a long piece of cloth, made of cotton for the typical woman or silk for those with money to spare. The saree measures 6 to 9 feet in length. A woman wears the saree with a blouse and a skirt underneath, then wraps the cloth around her body. The key to removing the saree correctly is to take it off without tangling and fold it properly to make it easier to put on again.

Instructions

    • 1

Take out the safety pin securing the saree where it drapes over the shoulder. Women in India refer to this part of the saree as the "pallu" or "pallav."

    • 2

Pull the pallu down and away from the shoulder with your free hand and secure it neatly by folding it against your waist with both hands.

    • 3

Remove the saree from the waist by unwrapping it and untucking the pleats, while simultaneously folding it into the folded pallu. Fold the remaining fabric in the same manner and then fold the saree twice, lengthwise, to store.
