You can fix a NTLDR problem with your Windows installation CD.

The NTLDR file is vital to the Windows system's performance. A missing or damaged indicates an issue with your system's boot loader. If this is the case, your computer cannot boot to its operating system. You can repair the NTLDR problem by using your Windows installation CD.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your Windows XP/2000 CD installation disc into your computer's CD/DVD drive. Restart your computer system.

    • 2

Press any key on your keyboard after the computer restarts in response to the "Press any key to enter setup" prompt.

    • 3

Allow the Windows set-up screen to load. Press the "R" key to begin the Windows repair process. Press the "1" key and "Enter." You will be asked for a password. If you do not have one, leave the area blank and press "Enter."

    • 4

Type the following when you see "c:\WINDOWS>" on the screen with a blinking cursor:

      "copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\windows"

The "D" in "copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\windows" represents your CD/DVD drive. If the drives letter is different, just insert it in the place of "D."

    • 5

Eject the CD from your computer system. Type "Exit" and restart your computer. The NTLDR file will be copied from the CD onto your hard drive.
