How to Host With a SSL Certificate

SSL, also known as a Secure Socket Layer, is a safety protocol used to protect Web users from having their sensitive information intercepted, such as usernames, passwords, credit card information and more. When a Web user tries to access a secure version of a website by adding an "S" to the end of the "HTTP" protocol, the browser will request the website's SSL certificate, which verifies the website's safety and information. If your website doesn't have an SSL certificate, the SSL connection will fail and your users will not be secured. You can add an SSL certificate to any of your hosted websites.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the company you want to purchase your SSL certificate from. Research the company before purchasing a certificate. Some websites selling SSL certificates are scams. Three legitimate SSL companies are Verisign, GoDaddy and Digicert.

    • 2

Compare the type of SSL certificates available in your budget range and pick the one that best meets your requirements. Low-priced SSL certificates may cost less than $200, and offer lower bit encryption minimums, while certificates with higher bit encryption minimums may be $500 or more.

    • 3

Purchase an SSL certificate from the company you choose. Most companies will have you select the type of SSL certificate you want, then request that you set up an account. Once you have set up an account, further instructions will be given for you to set up via email.

    • 4

Generate a CSR file for the server where your website is hosted. The method used to generate the CSR file will depend on what type of server you're running. An Apache server, for example, will require a different method than a Java server.

    • 5

Paste the CSR information into the SSL certificate purchase form. Choose your server type. Enter the information relevant to your host and server, such as the domain name. Review your information a final time before submitting it. An SSL certificate will be generated for your hosted website. You can renew your certificate and change your website information in the account you set up to purchase the SSL certificate.
