When chewing gum gets stuck to cotton, it seems nearly impossible to remove. The sticky texture of the gum is what makes the removal process so difficult as it is messy and sticks tightly to the cotton. To successfully remove the gum from the cotton, the best thing to do is change the actual composition and texture of the gum. By hardening the gum, it loses that sticky adhesive property and allows you to easily break off the chewing gum.
Things You'll Need
- Freezer or ice cubes
- Sandwich bags
- Dull knife
- Stain remover, optional
- Laundry detergent
- Washing machine
- Cleaning rag
Place the cotton piece in the freezer for one hour. If the cotton item is too large for the freezer, place an ice cube into a plastic sandwich bag and sit it on top of the gum for one hour.
Break off the hardened gum with a dull knife, trying to get between the cotton and chewing gum while cleaning. Continue until all gum is removed from the surface.
Launder the item as usual. If any gum residue remains on the garment, apply a stain lifter and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Launder with your normal laundry detergent and a cold water wash cycle. If the item is too large to wash in the washing machine, moisten a cleaning rag with cold water and a drop of laundry detergent. Blot over the cotton, rinse the cleaning rag and blot again to remove any detergent residue.
