Instead of simply throwing away used garbage can lids, consider the benefits of reusing the lid in creative new ways. Not only can reusing your lids save you some cash on a few simple household accessory items, but also it can provide you with a few fun crafts activities. With some simple altercations and additions, and old garbage lid can easily be transformed into something new and useful. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Garbage can lid
  • Utility knife
  • Compost
  • Seeds
  • Rope

Instructions

  1. Plant Nursery

    • 1

      Flip your trash lid so that the curved top is facing upward.

      Use the utility knife to cut out 10 to 15 holes at the very top of the curved lid, approximately the size of a fingernail.

      Bury your lid with the curved top facing down in the soil. Only bury halfway in the ground, leave at least 2 inches of the lid out of the soil.

      Add your compost to the lid, along with the seed of whatever plant you are hoping to grow in it.

    Sled

    • 5

      Flip your trash lid so the curved top is facing upward.

    • 6

      Use your knife to cut four holes holes, two on either side of the lid near the base. The holes should be about 6 inches apart. The holes should be sized according to the thickness of your rope.

      Use two pieces of your rope, roughly the length of your forearm, to tie handles through the holes on your lid.

Tips & Warnings

  • Think about adding a sort of cushion or padding to the inside of your sled for a more comfortable ride.

  • Only adults or others under careful supervision should use utility knives.
