Many recipes call for lemon juice. When you don't have a bottle of juice in the refrigerator, but do have a few fresh lemons, it is easy to substitute fresh lemon juice for bottled. Adding a bit of lemon zest to the juice will give your recipe even more lemon taste. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Lemons
  • Knife
  • Measuring cup
  • Strainer
  • Bowl
  • Lemon zester (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut a fresh lemon in half around the equator of the fruit.

      Squeeze the lemon juice from the fruit into a measuring cup or bowl.

      Strain the juice through a wire mesh strainer and into a bowl to remove the seeds.

      Substitute the juice of one lemon for each 3 tbsp. of lemon juice called for in your recipe.

      Add up to 1 tsp. of grated lemon zest to the juice for more flavor.

Tips & Warnings

  • This substitution can also work in reverse. Substitute 2 to 3 tbsp. of bottled lemon juice for the juice in one medium lemon.

  • Roll the lemon several times across the table or counter top using your palm to soften the fruit. This will help the lemon to release more juice.
