Computers can be used to fax documents and images.

The maximum connection speed for dial-up modems is 56k. When dial-up Internet connections first became available, the speeds were much slower but eventually increased. The only modems available for purchase now are 56k because modems themselves are becoming obsolete with the advent of broadband. One advantage of a dial-up modem is that some have fax capabilities.

Instructions

Make sure you have a fax modem. If your modem is not a 56k fax modem, purchase one that is a fax modem. Connect the fax modem to an open USB port on your computer.

    • 2

Connect a phone line from a working phone jack to your modem. There may be two connections on the modem, one for the phone line and one for a phone. Make sure you connect to the correct port.

    • 3

Attach a scanner to your computer. Most scanners have USB connections, so you can just plug them in. Scan in any images you want to fax, unless the document or image is already on the computer.

Start fax software. Enter the phone number of the fax machine you want to dial. Use the options to attach the document or image. Click the "Send" button after making sure no one is on the phone line.
