Reserving a vanity license plate in Massachusetts must be done in person. Visit a full-service Registry Branch in the state and fill out an application. The application is a single page and requires you to disclose your contact information and your plate requests. You are allowed to submit your top three choices. The first two characters on a vanity license plate must be letters in Massachusetts. You can have as many as six characters on your plate.

      Pay the application fee.

      Wait for processing to be completed. This could take several months. If your application is approved you will receive a notification telling you when and where to pick up your plate. Once you pick up your plate you will have to return your old plate and pay the "swap fee."

  • Visit the Massachusetts Department of Transportation website to check if a plate is available.

  • You can use only numbers at the end of the plate, and the first number cannot be zero. You must pick your vanity plate up within 90 days of arrival.
