How to Dye Fiberglass

Save

Years of wear and tear makes fiberglass materials look old, affecting the appearance of your home. Dyeing fiberglass is the same as staining or painting the material, because you are essentially putting a new coat of color on the fiberglass. Painting fiberglass is similar to any other type of painting. Thoroughly clean the fiberglass prior to painting it to achieve a long lasting appearance.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Dye kit
  • Clean cloth
  • Paintbrush
  • Topcoat
  • Clean the surface of the fiberglass using soapy water. Squirt a small amount of dish soap into warm water and remove dirt or grime off of the fiberglass with a sponge. Rinse the soapy water away with clean water and allow to thoroughly air dry.

  • Purchase a stain or dye kit from the home improvement store. Apply the dye to the fiberglass by adding a small amount to a clean cloth and rubbing it on the surface in a circular motion. Start in the center of the fiberglass and work your way out. Dye small, workable areas of the fiberglass instead of trying to complete the entire surface in a single sitting.

  • Allow the stain to sit on the fiberglass as long as desired for the effect you want. For light colored fiberglass, only allow the stain to sit on the surface for a short period of time before wiping off with a clean cloth or brush. If you want a darker dye, allow the stain to sit on the surface longer before wiping off.

  • Allow the dye to dry for at least 48 hours before adding the topcoat.

  • Finish the project by applying a topcoat. Add thin coats to the surface using a clean paintbrush. The topcoat will go on with a milky consistency and dry clear. Allow the first coat to dry as directed on the instructions, then add the second and final coat.
