How to Get Welfare Benefits in Texas

A welfare benefit, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), is a government program that provides cash benefits to families that meet certain eligibility criteria. In Texas, welfare benefits only last for a limited amount of time, and recipients are required to seek work while they are receiving their welfare benefits.

Welfare benefits come in two forms: a monthly payment or a larger yearly payment. A caseworker will help you decide whether your family needs the monthly or yearly payment. No matter which type of benefit you select, you will be required to reapply on a regular basis.
