How to Hyperlink to a Worksheet in Another Workbook

How to Hyperlink to a Worksheet in Another Workbook thumbnail
Spreadsheets can link to other workbooks.

Worksheets allow users to link to locations within the worksheet or to sources outside the worksheet. A hyperlink is text that links to another location. Users can create a hyperlink to an existing file or Web page, a place within the document, a new document or to an e-mail address. Creating a hyperlink to a worksheet in another workbook is not much different from creating a hyperlink to any location. Microsoft Excel 2007 allows users to create a hyperlink efficiently. Updates to the software may change the required steps, but Excel has permitted hyperlink usage for more than a decade.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the spreadsheet you wish to link to. Make sure that you find the worksheet within that spreadsheet you want to appear when you set up the hyperlink. You can toggle through worksheets within a workbook by clicking on the worksheet tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. Once the worksheet is selected, save that workbook and close out of the file.

    • 2

Open up the workbook in which you wish to create a hyperlink. Go to the cell where you want the hyperlink to be. Click on that cell and type in a word or description that you want to use as your hyperlink. For example, if you are linking to a financial worksheet from a previous year, type "2008 Figures" as your hyperlink text. Hit the "Enter" key.

    • 3

Click once on the cell with the text inside it. Select the "Insert" tab from the menu ribbon at the top of the screen by clicking on it. Click on "Hyperlink" to create a link to another location. A dialog box will appear automatically.

    • 4

Search through the files to find the spreadsheet with the information you want to hyperlink to. Click through the folder locations until you see a list with the file that you want to hyperlink. It may take a minute to find the file depending on where you saved it.

    • 5

Double-click on the file name. The dialog box will close automatically and the text that you wanted to use for your hyperlink will appear blue and underlined. The hyperlink is now established. You can access the hyperlinked worksheet by clicking on the link you created. A security notice may appear, but click "Yes" to continue to your hyperlinked worksheet. Save your new workbook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save your workbooks in memorable locations so that you may access them quickly.
