How to Make a Prom Dress Out of Duct Tape

A duct tape dress can be a creative, alternative way to dress for prom night. Duct tape comes in a variety of colors and widths, which gives you many options when designing a dress. Instructions

Create a Large Swatch

1. Lay strips of tape out with the sticky side up, overlapping just a little, to make a large swatch of material. Make them longer than the width of the dress. Having extra material is better than running short.

2. Lay strips of tape, sticky side down, on the sticky side of the swatch. If you want the dress t0 be softer on the inside, stick a thick cloth to the swatch instead. Draw and cut a pattern from the swatch.

3. Sew the pattern pieces together at the edges. To create a smooth seam, use narrow pieces of duct tape. Stick the narrow tape to the surface of the sewn seams. The tape should be aligned with the seams.

Tips & Warnings

• Take very accurate measurements because duct tape does not stretch.

• Duct tape is sticky and inflexible. If it is worn without a cloth backing, it might cause sweating or skin irritation.
