How to Get Rid of Human Papillomavirus

Human Papillomavirus is a virus capable of causing infection in humans. A person who has HPV infection could have been infected by any of the 100 or more related HPVs. Each HPV type can cause warts in different parts of the human body, including genitals, hands and feet. Warts or lesions in the upper respiratory system and mouth are other known manifestations of HPV infection. While most HPV infections do not cause cancers, some can lead to cervical cancer in women and the cancer of anus and penis in men. HPV virus itself cannot be eliminated completely, but the manifestations of the virus infection can be reduced through treatments.

Let the body's immune system take charge. The immune system destroys the virus in most cases, and warts, if any, disappear by themselves without any treatment. Some HPV treatments include administration of Imiquimod (Aldara) to increase the ability of body's immune system to get rid of HPV and thereby remove genital warts.

Get rid of HPV by preventing infection. Cervarix and Gardasil are available for females between the ages of nine and 26. Both of these vaccines prevent type 16 and 18 HPV infection, which is responsible for cervical cancer. Gardasil, also available for boys and men between the ages of nine and 26, prevents HPV infection of type 6 and 11, responsible for genital warts in men and women. According to MayoClinic.com, the ideal period for vaccination for adolescents is before they become sexually active.

Controlling the spread of the virus is another way to get rid of it. HPV virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact and can enter your body through a cut or even a slight tear on the skin. Practice monogamy and ensure that your partner is also monogamous. Using a latex condom can help control the spread of HPV infection to certain extent. Avoid pulling off common warts as infection spreads by such action. Reduce the risk of plantar warts on feet by being clean and wearing slippers in commonly shared areas such as locker rooms and public pools.

Tips & Warnings

  • Regular Pap tests can lead to early detection of cervical cancer-causing HPV infection, which can help prevent the cancer.

  • Adolescents and children are more vulnerable to HPV infection. It is better to have them vaccinated earlier.
