How to Change My Home Phone Number

Save

Whether you are tired of all the telemarketers who somehow got your number, or you are trying to avoid being harassed, getting a new phone number is often the only way to prevent unwanted calls. With the help of the phone company, you can change your home number without much trouble and save your family from those constant interruptions.

  • Contact your phone company. You can normally find the number to your phone company in front of the phone book that you receive each year, or on your phone bill. Call the number and follow the automated instructions to reach to a customer service agent. Sometimes you can dial "0" after you get into the system to go directly to a customer service representative.

  • Request a phone number change. The representative will generally need a reason for the phone change, for the company's records, such as harassing phone calls. You can also request an unlisted number, especially if you are having difficulties with outside phone calls.

  • Pay the fee involved with the change of a number, if it is required, or have it added to your phone bill. Unlisted numbers normally cost extra.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are fortunate to live in an area where you have an option of more than one phone company, switching services to a different company will get you a new number unless you ask to keep the old one.
