How to Order a New Vehicle Title in Texas

If you want to sell your car, you need your title proving ownership. If you have lost or misplaced your title, you can order a new one from the department of motor vehicles. In Texas, you can request a replacement title either online or in person. You must pay for the new title by check or money order as the Texas DMV does not accept credit or debit cards.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a copy of the application for title certificate from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles or visit a regional office to obtain an application.

    • 2

Fill out the application using blue or black ink. Provide the make, model and license plate number for your vehicle as well as your vehicle identification number. You can find your VIN on your registration or on the dashboard or driver's side door of your vehicle.

    • 3

Sign and date the application. Provide your mailing address at the bottom of the application.

    • 4

Make a copy of your driver's license if you are returning the application by mail. Mail the application to your regional DMV office along with your copy of your driver's license and your fee, which is $2, as of 2010. If you apply in person, show your ID to the DMV clerk and pay a fee of $5.45, as of 2010.

  • If you are still making payments on a vehicle loan, your lienholder must fill out the application for a replacement title.
