How to Paint an Auguste Face

How to Paint an Auguste Face thumbnail
Auguste clown faces have white make-up around the mouth and eyes.

Auguste clowns are the clumsy, slap-stick artists of the entertainment world. "Auguste" is a German word that means "fool." Although the origins of auguste clowns are not clear, they are considered to be a cross between whiteface and hobo clowns. Unlike whiteface clowns, only the areas around the auguste clown's eyes and mouth are painted white. When you paint your auguste face, the goal should be to exaggerate your comical expression. Compliment your costume with a red nose, a red wig or a small hat and over-sized, colorful clothing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look at online pictures of auguste clowns to get ideas for your own face. Examples of famous auguste clowns are Albert Fratellini, Lou Jacobs, Coco the Clown and Cooky the Clown.

    • 2

Use a face-paint sponge to apply white paint around your mouth. Make a heart shape around your mouth with a band of white approximately an inch thick. The white paint should reach the bottom of your cheekbones, go under the nose and cover the flat portion of your chin.

    • 3

Paint the section above each eye with white paint using the sponge. Cover your eyelids, the section under your eyebrows and a small section above the eyebrows. The white paint sections should be the width of each eye and slightly rounded to replicate the shape of the eye. You can also add a thin band of white under each eye.

    • 4

Paint your entire bottom lip with either black or red face paint using a thin paint brush. With a medium-sized paint brush create two oblong-shaped pips, approximately half an inch long, on either side of your mouth. Each pip should start at the corner of your lips and point towards the outermost corner of that side's eye.

    • 5

Outline the white section around your mouth with red face paint using a medium sized brush. Try to apply paint in one continual stroke.

    • 6

Outline the white sections above your eyes with black paint. You can either fully outline these sections or partially to create exaggerated eye brows.

    • 7

Add any other embellishments you desire, such as freckles, eyelashes, geometric shapes or small vertical lines below your lines. Feel free to use other colors besides red and black. Paint the bottom portion of your nose red if you do not have a round nose piece.
