How to Store Vintage Handkerchiefs

Store a vintage handkerchief properly to keep it in good condition.

If you cherish vintage handkerchiefs, store your collection properly to ensure the fabric stays in the best possible condition. Vintage handkerchiefs are available in a variety of materials, such as cotton, lace, silk and rayon. Many antique handkerchiefs feature charming patterns, such as embroidered or printed hearts, flowers, animals, leaves and holiday designs. You can use vintage handkerchiefs as home décor, such as table liners or framed wall hangings, or in creative craft projects.

Things You'll Need

• Vintage handkerchiefs
• Water and gentle detergent
• Plastic storage container with an air-tight lid
• Acid-free tissue paper

Instructions

1. Hand-wash soiled handkerchiefs in warm water with a gentle detergent prior to storing them. Hang the handkerchiefs and allow them to air-dry.

2. Line a plastic storage container featuring an air-tight lid with acid-free tissue paper.

3. Place a piece of acid-free tissue paper on a flat surface, such as a table. Set a vintage handkerchief on top of the tissue paper and roll them together. Repeat this process for each handkerchief you are storing. Avoid folding the handkerchiefs, which will crease the fabric.

4. Set the rolled handkerchiefs in the tissue-paper lined storage container. Press the air-tight lid onto the container to create a secure seal.

5. Store the container of handkerchiefs in a cool, dry location such as a closet or drawer. Keep the stored handkerchiefs out of direct sunlight, which may degrade and discolor the fabric.
