How to Research Car History
When purchasing a used car, consumers search for a vehicle that is comfortable and reliable. A common practice among private and dealer-based used car salesmen is failing to mention a vehicle's problems. To sell a specific vehicle, the car is often primped and the consumer is offered a discount on a seemingly good vehicle. It is important to properly research a vehicle before making a purchase. By obtaining a car's vehicle identification number, you can research a vehicle to make an informed decision.

1
Visit the seller of the vehicle. Have a conversation and ask him questions about the vehicle. Bring up key points such as accidents the car has been involved in, any major repairs done to the car and information about previous owners.
-
2
Make notes of any information you find useful. Inspect the car and look for cosmetic damages. If you are interested in purchasing the vehicle, obtain the vehicle's vehicle identification number from the seller.

Obtain a complete car report. This can be done by visiting your local DMV and presenting a representative with the vehicle's VIN. Ask for a complete car report. State vehicle reports are sometimes not as accurate as ones that can be obtained through various online businesses. Visit CarFax or Auto Check and purchase a complete vehicle report. Review the car report for any problems.

Present the vehicle report and your notes to the seller of the car. Ask him to explain any questions you may have regarding the car.
