How to Use an AT&T GoPhone on a Contract Account

Save

AT&T provides prepaid cell phone service in addition to its standard contract service plans. Prepaid cell phones access the same AT&T network as regular contract phones. Many of the phones have features that are comparable to regular contract phones, including Internet access, multimedia messaging and call waiting. However, it is possible to use a prepaid AT&T GoPhone with a standard contract. This is done by inserting a SIM (subscriber identity module) card associated with an AT&T contract into the prepaid phone. The SIM card enables the prepaid phone to access the wireless service plan of the contract phone.

  • Turn off the AT&T phone that has the monthly contract. Take off the battery cover, then remove the battery. Most cell phones follow the same procedure to remove and insert SIM cards.

  • Remove the SIM card and place it in a safe place. Alternatively, you can order a replacement SIM card for your contract phone by calling an AT&T representative or directly visiting an AT&T outlet store.

  • Turn off the prepaid GoPhone, then remove the SIM card. Insert the SIM card from the contract phone into the GoPhone. Replace the battery and the cover, then turn on the phone. The GoPhone will find the AT&T network and you will have full access to the contract account's plan minutes and features.
