How to Choose Tire Size

Tires can be many different sizes.

All motor vehicles need tires to operate properly. The tires are the part of the vehicle that comes into contact with the road. They help you handle the vehicle, and affect traction and load capacity. With the right tires, your vehicle will be able to take on even the worst road conditions. However, the most important aspect of choosing new tires for your vehicle is making sure you are choosing the correct tire size.

Instructions

1. Look closely at the tire on your vehicle if the tire is already the proper size for your vehicle. On the sidewall, you will find a list of numbers and letters that represent the tire's size.

2. Check the vehicle load and information placard located on the doorjamb on the driver's side of your vehicle if your vehicle does not have tires or if its current tires are not the correct size. You will see an area labeled "Tire Size" and the correct size for the vehicle will be listed underneath.

3. Go to the website of the manufacturer of your vehicle and find a customer service number if you cannot read the placard. Contact the manufacturer to find out the recommended tire size for your vehicle's make and model.

4. Write down the size you find and make sure you have a general understanding of how to read it. An example of an actual tire size is "215/70R16." The first three numbers represent the tire's width. The two numbers before the "R" represent the tire's aspect ratio, and the two numbers after the "R" represent the rim size.

5. Take your written tire size to a tire shop to find the correct tire for your vehicle. A service provider should be able to help you. Other places where you can find vehicle tires include auto repair shops, large department stores and manufacturers' websites.
