How to Wire Standalone DSL

How to Wire Standalone DSL thumbnail
You can set up standalone DSL yourself.

Many DSL providers offer standalone DSL kits that are designed to be connected and configured by the end user instead of needing a technical professional to install it. However, connecting everything together still requires some basic computer knowledge and can seem overwhelming, if all of the required steps are not followed correctly. Self-install standalone DSL kits have the advantage of being installed on your schedule instead of needing to wait for an appointment from your DSL provider.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unpack everything from the box.

    • 2

Connect the provided filters to all of the phones on the premises.

    • 3

Plug the provided phone cable into a provided DSL filter. Plug the filter into a phone jack on the wall.

    • 4

Plug the other end of the provided phone cable into the jack on the back of the DSL modem.

    • 5

Plug one end of the provided Ethernet cable into the DSL modem. Ethernet cables look very similar to phone cables, but the plug is slightly larger.

    • 6

Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the back of the computer.

    • 7

Plug the DSL modem into an electrical outlet and turn it on. Wait approximately two minutes for the DSL modem to synchronize the signal with the DSL provider.

    • 8

Insert the provided CD into the drive on the computer and follow the on-screen instructions to finish the DSL setup.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the DSL modem does not receive a DSL signal, be sure all of the filters are connected properly. Disconnect all of the telephones on the premises as a troubleshooting step.
