How Do You File for Homestead Exemption in Texas?
If you own a residence in Texas, you may be able to receive a homestead tax exemption. According to the Texas comptroller's website, a homestead can be a separate structure, condominium or a manufactured home located on owned or leased land. Homestead tax exemptions exempt part of your home's value from taxation. To receive this exemption, you must meet certain criteria and complete required paperwork.

Go to the Texas comptroller's website at www.window.state.tx.us. Download Form 50-114, Application for Residence Homestead Exemption.

Complete the application, answering all of the questions, and print out the form. Sign and date the printed form. Keep a copy of this form for your personal records.

File the form with your local appraisal district. You can find your appraisal district from the state comptroller's website. Mail in your application or bring it to your local appraisal district office. The chief appraiser in your district will process your application and will notify you when your homestead tax exemption has been processed.

If you do not hear from your appraisal office in 2 to 3 weeks after submitting your application, contact the office to check on your application status.
Before filing for a homestead tax exemption, make sure you meet all the required qualifications. For example, your home must be your principal residence on January 1 of the tax year. Check with your appraisal office for the most up-to-date information.
