How to Get the Best Distance With Your Wireless
Wireless networking is nearly everywhere, as of 2010. Almost every new computer and mobile device supports connecting to a wireless hotspot. A wireless access point or wireless router must be installed and configured to provide wireless access to these devices. When the overall range or distance provided by the wireless device is important, there are steps that can be taken to ensure you receive the best possible wireless signal for the farthest supportable distance.

1
Configure your wireless router or access point for the strongest possible wireless signal. This is a feature typically found only on more expensive routers and access points. Otherwise, a router or access point is configured to provide the strongest signal it is capable of by default.
-
2
Install high-gain antennas on the router or access point. Once again, only more expensive models will typically include the ability to change the factory-installed antennas for high-gain versions.

3
Install a high-gain antenna on the wireless device. Some wireless devices, such as PCI or PCI-E desktop wireless cards, include the ability to replace the antenna with a high-gain version.
-
4
Clear the access point or router of as many obstructions as possible. Wireless signals radiate from all directions, unless special directional antennas are installed. For example, in a two-story house, placing the router or access point on the second floor will enable a stronger wireless signal for wireless devices on both the first and second floors.
