How to Use American Express Bonus Points
Make your purchases go further through the American Express Membership Rewards program. By participating in the program, you earn one Membership Rewards point ( also called bonus points) for each dollar you spend. Redeem points for hotel, restaurant or electronics purchases. Use your points at any time on any item offered. If you don't have enough points for a wanted item, you can purchase more (1000 extra points costs $30 in 2010). Transfer points to a friend or loved one, or convert them into Frequent Flyer miles for added flexibility.

Charge purchases on your American Express card to begin racking up bonus points. Per American Express, you receive one bonus point for every dollar you spend. The points don't expire, so there's no rush to use them.

Log into the American Express Membership Rewards page to browse available rewards (see Resources). You will need your credit card number, your user id and password. Create one from the login page if you've never used the service before.

View available rewards and your bonus point balance. Click on an item for more details and to get to the page to redeem points.

Click "Redeem Now" to use your points.

Fill in your mailing address if it's different from your billing address (otherwise, leave it blank). Read the Terms & Conditions and check the appropriate box before continuing.

Click "Continue" to review the transaction details. Then click "Submit." You will be prompted to enter your card number and the 4-digit number printed on the card; do so.

Click continue one more time to complete the transaction. View the transaction identification number and write this down in case you need to follow up on your reward.

Tips & Warnings
Rewards take up to 14 days to arrive in the mail, per American Express.
To convert points to Frequent Flyer miles, you must be enrolled in the Membership Rewards Frequent Traveller Option and can transfer points from the Membership Rewards login page.
