How to Test for a CDL License

How to Test for a CDL Licensethumbnail
Testing for a commercial driver's license, or CDL, is regulated by the Department of Transportation.

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Act of 1986 improved highway safety by requiring drivers to be specifically licensed and qualified to drive large trucks and buses. Each state must follow the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for minimum licensing requirements, including proof of identification, a medical exam, a background check and driver history, and a skills test. Testing for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) can only be completed after the driver has completed the other steps necessary to apply for the CDL.

Check with your state to determine the specific requirements for applying to test for a CDL within your state. Do this by calling a local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), looking on their website or going in person. Obtain a copy of the driver manual to begin studying for the skills and knowledge tests.

Complete the Medical Long Form and Transportation Security Administration background check if you haven't already. The Medical Long Form requires visiting a doctor to have a physical exam that includes vision and hearing tests and urinalysis.

      • 3

Gather all documents necessary including, but not limited to, two forms of identification (one of which can be a standard driver's license) Social Security card, Medical Long Form, background check and proof of insurance.

      • 4

Check if you need an appointment; some DMV offices require that you call ahead to schedule an appointment when testing for a CDL. Visit a local DMV to complete the application for your CDL.

      • 5

Take the knowledge test, which consists of at least 30 questions. All information on the knowledge test can be memorized ahead of time. You must score at least 80 percent on this test to pass.

      • 6

Take the skills test. Perform each skill in the same type of vehicle that you intend to operate under the CDL you are applying for. You must complete all skills to pass the skills test.
