How to Keep the Same Phone Number Using Net10

Save

With a Net10 prepaid phone, you can control your budget more tightly, but you may wonder if you can keep your existing phone number. The Federal Communication Commission's (FCC's) Local Number Portability (LNP) Act means that you can keep your phone number when switching to or from any wireless phone company, including Net10. According to FCC rules, carriers must allow you to keep your old number when you switch providers, even if you owe your old phone company money.

  • Purchase a Net10 wireless phone.

  • Click on the Net10 "Start transferring my number from another company" link (see Resources).

  • Click "I agree to these terms" and then click "Continue."

  • Type the serial number of your phone into the "Serial Number" box, then click "Continue."

  • Follow the instructions to activate your phone. You will need to supply identifying account information like your old phone number, the old provider's name and your account number.

  • Wait for the porting process to complete. During this time, you may have dual service on two phones. After the porting process is complete, service to your old phone will be disconnected.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't cut off service with your old provider until the porting process is complete. In order to process a port, you must have an active phone number.
  • During the porting process, 911 operators may not be able to call you back or locate you in an emergency. If you have to dial 911, give the operator your location and provide them with an alternate phone number to contact you if possible.
  • You must keep your Net10 service active to keep your phone number. If you have a break in service, you will lose your phone number.
